Day 4: Web 2.0 Training

25th June 2009

The previous day began with a recap of the previous day. The main focus of the activities was on the moodle learning management system. The objectives of this activity were:

  1. Create Moodle Accounts
  2. Explore the moodle environment
  3. Create courses on moodle
  4. Peer Review what we have posted
  5. Posting ODL content in a central repository
Objectives 4 and 5 remained outstanding and will be covered during day 4.

The evaluation was carried out differently. Eight participants were selected to pretend that they were donors evaluating the following project proposals:
  • Objectives of the Moodle Session
  • Internet
  • Facilitation
  • Moodle
  • Time management
  • Participation
  • Open Distance Learning
  • Hotel and Accommodation

Objective being evaluated

Comments

Donor Decision

Objectives of the Moodle Session

Objective not well covered especially the Peer review was not handled.

Good will on the part of the facilitators.

Refer back the objectives

Internet

Internet connectivity has been Excellent for the day

Proposal approved funds given

Facilitation

Morning session catered for those that had not finished their assignments

Afternoon session was slow because people were not on the same level. A brief on what the expectation of moodle would have been put into consideration.

Step by step outline of steps to follow could have been very helpful.

Half of the funds will be released for the proposed project

Moodle

Improve the Moodle presentation

The Idea is good and deserves to be given a chance.

Time management

Lunch Breaks get in the way because participants are still doing their work.

Files have been lost due to the Server problems of saving the participants work.

Funding approved

Participation

Full Participation of members

Bonus funds approved by the donor

Open Distance Learning

It needs more time and illustrations for the participants to understand the concept.

Need for review before approval

Hotel and Accommodation

Power problem was solved but a number of participants didn’t have power outlets so starting late.

No complaint on Food, Water supply was Okay,

There is a marked improvement. Donor is happy

  1. Day 4:
Learned about use of moodle to deliver and mark exams, give assignments and upload them. The chat was most exiting (thanks to Nice).

    The facilitation was very good.

  2. The day was an improvement with regards to the major concern of Day 3: the grounding of the use of the Web 2.0 tools. The Facilitation responded by allowing pax go through the process. All exercises were hands-on-EXCELENT. Good presence of facilitators through the process. I will give a CLEAN 10.0

I give 9 for all other aspects of the workshop to emphasize the excellent response by the facilitators ON fACILITATION.

WELL DONE ORDERLY, NICE AND NORMAL!

  3. Day 4 was very progressive. More was achieved compared to day 3. The facilitation was better with a grade of 9. There was no interruption of power. Internet connectivity was also not interrupted. The better performance could also have been due to the general improvement of our general ICT skills after 4 days of intense work.

  4. Day 4 was a generaly a success. The Moodle activities were very practical and closely related with our day to day activities. Although participants will need constant practice to grasp how to navigate easily through the Moodle template. The peer review that began with courses in ODL, was good in that it allowed individuals to quietly do a self-evaluation and see where to improve.

Certainly the chicken by the poolside was great.

  5. I am happy to review the facilitation process. On Day 4 the facilitation was very good as compared to the other days. As usual the objectives of the day were clearly outlined. Then an example of an institution using Moodle was given. The challenges of E-learning were discussed followed by further discussion on Moodle focusing on activities. This was well presented. The afternoon session was on Peer reviewing of materials and was well handled. The facilitators seem to have been paying attention to the review comments and for this they are commended.

  6. Day started off well without a word of prayer as apparently is the norm for this workshop.
A recap of day 3 that involved all the participants was well conducted by Malleable. Fortunate took us through their experiences with Moodle at Africa University Zimbabwe. Nice guided us on adding activity to our modules (CATs n Assignments and Different question types) which marked the end of the morning session.
The afternoon session mainly dealt with reviewing the E-content so far done. I may not explain here, but all I know is that I scored @#$%#$@ marks. I hope the issue of the grade I got ends here in this room. The session ened with setting the stage for developing the review procedures for the modules to be developed.
A nice dinner at the poolside capped the day.

  7. I have learned quite a lot on how to use web 2.0 tools. On day 4 it was quite exciting to learn on how to use moodle, especially on how to set exams, mark and grade exams. In general day 4 was quite fruitful. The facilitation was excellent, the internet connectivity was okay and time management was greatly improved. The participatory approach to the activities was quite useful.

  8. The training session was successful. Mistakes trainees made in their assignments were inevitable. The fact is, trainees were already at different technological levels before they started the training course. I believe that the trainees will later successfully develop their teaching manuals/courses when they return to their respective institutions. Time management was very good; almost all trainees participated in deliberations; hotel accommodation was reasonable;facilitation was efficiently and professionally done, and we should really congratulate all facilitators for the job well done; development of e-content through ODL was also well demonstrated in class, although participants did not have enough time to complete their assignments. The important point is that the trainees will return home better eduacted because they will have known the process involved, and can do a perfect job later on e-content development. Peer review was discussed, and the process of reviewing documents/courses was clarified through group comments. Moodle software is very expensive, but absolutely necessary in any university, but our immediate access to Moodle software will be limited by its cost. At least participants will continue working on their courses using ODL software. This training should be a continuous process as this will help participants to significantly improve their capabillities in the uses of ODL, MOODLE, and BLOGGING communication platforms, etc.

  9. The ODL template review was very important because it helped us to realize the level of population that the module writers had reached. The review was a motivation for theose who were ahead and an encouragement for those that were still behind. The review excess also was an eye opener on the challenges that we may face during the review process.

  10. I still have a lot to do to be able follow how to use Moodle.

The Peer Review session was a good change from the computer activities. It enabled us to express our ideas. I liked the views from the different groups.

  11. Day 4 was exciting, especially appreciating the purpose of the ODL template, its purpose and populating the template. To add icing to the cake I was awarded an "interesting" mark for the work done on the ODL. We also went through the Content peer review process, which I discovered involves an lot of players and am keen to see the overall framework hopefully at the end of the day(5), which will act as a clear guide in the in any future review process.

  12. Comments on Proceedings of Day 4
    A. The session starded with evaluation of day 3.
    The evaluation was participatory

    B. Most of the morning session was dedicated to

an account and to post meterial on it.
We learnt how to set exams of different types
and swithed roles from lecturer to student
and posted comments in the chat room.
The session was very good 8/10
    C. We evaluated outputs from the ODL. Most
participants were at various stages of
completing onit one but none was totally
completed. Issues of pedadogy were the most
    deficient. Group Review Process 7/10
    D. The last part of the day was dedicated to
peer reviewing of the ODL. Initially all
members participated in the review process.
Later, participants engaged in developing a

  13. My internet conectivity is bad. However, yesterday was a very good day. I can confidently create activities like assignments, quizes and chit chats using the moodle modes of editing and publising. The best was the peer review or refereeing process. For this one I am already using it.
Be on the lookout for more comments in the near future.
    Thanks
